Description Die bereits 1972 eingeführte Sofortbildkamera ist mit einem Ultraschallsystem ausgestattet, das an dem großen Schalltrichter über dem Objektiv zu erkennen ist. Ein elektronischer Wandler sendet einen nicht hörbaren Ultraschall-Ton aus, der zurückgeworfene Schall wird über Filter ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse werden zur exakten Entfernungseinstellung an einen Motor weitergegeben. Dieser in Bruchteilen einer Sekunde ablaufende Vorgang wird beim Auslösen der Kamera in Gang gesetzt.
Der sehr rasch ablaufende Ultraschall-Autofokus von Polaroid ist ein Sonderfall geblieben, da das System viel Platz in Anspruch nimmt und daher für Kompaktkameras nicht in Frage kommt.
