Description Satelliten dieser Größe bezeichnet man als Pico-Satelliten. Forscher am Lehrstuhl für Robotik und Telematik entwickelten 2004 den Winzling UWE-1 für Telekommunikations-Experimente im Weltraum. Sie optimierten damit Internet-Protokolle für die Datenübertragung. Außerdem testete die Industrie damit neue hochwirksame Solarzellen. 2005 startete UWE-1 ins All, 2006 folgte UWE-2 und der nochmals verbesserte UWE-3 startete am 21. November 2013.
Die UWE-Reihe ist nach der sogenannten CUBESAT-Norm gebaut. Sie stellt sicher, dass Pico-Satelliten problemlos in entsprechende Trägerraketen eingebaut werden können. Die Kosten für Entwicklung, Bau und Start des Satelliten sind für Universitäten erschwinglich.
